When Do You Need Water Damage Restoration?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

It does not matter if flooding was caused by a tropical storm, an out and out hurricane, or damage caused by trying to put out a fire. If you have had flooding in your home you really have a serious problem. You may need to act very quickly and find out what you must do to repair the damage. Water damage restoration is a very precise field that if done correctly can save you money.

Water damage comes under three different categories. Was it clean water from water lines? Was it contaminated water or gray water? And then the last category, which is the worst, did it come from sewage, which is considered black water.

Reacting quickly to this situation is vital since you do not want to also damage the value of your home. In addition to the initial water damage there may be other damage caused by the damp environment. Mold and mildew will grow throughout a damp house.

Mold cannot form if the area is dry so you must quickly take care of this. If this is not remedied immediately it can be a serious health hazard. Bacteria can grow within hours so those with respiratory ailments can be seriously affected.

The extent of the mold must be identified. This is done by using specialized equipment. There are special techniques used in removing the mold so as not to disturb the spores and cause a greater problem.

The first step is to extract the water, dry out the home, and sanitize it if it was contaminated. There is special equipment like air movers and dehumidifiers used by the professionals to speed up the drying process, which is a vital step. After all water is removed then cleaning the damaged areas is needed. Having the proper tools is vital so that this will be done properly. Your carpet may feel dry to the touch however the under padding could still be damp.

Testing the house should be done to evaluate if everything is dry and if not, what is the remaining moisture content. The water may have caused damage to your furniture, personal items, or the worst possible scenario, structural damage. Thermal imaging cameras are used to evaluate the extent of damage and moisture.

In monitoring the progress of the effectiveness of the work and equipment it can be determined which areas need more attention. Possibly one area was more damaged than another and this must be remedied. As the work is completed and deemed a safe environment according to industry standards, then restoration was a success.

Whatever it may have been that cause this damage it is best left to the professionals. Without the proper equipment and expertise it may not be safe or effective to do this yourself. The technician knows exactly what to investigate and what equipment to use. Your home may be damaged beyond repair and the decrease in value may be enormous. You do want your home back after this unfortunate situation.

Information About Water Damage Restoration

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Anyone who lives in an area that is prone to flooding or has a history of storms and hurricanes needs to prepare themselves by learning about water damage restoration. It’s not an easy job cleaning up after a disaster. Perhaps most importantly is drying the house as early as you can so that you are at less risk for bacteria and mold to burgeon. You also need to be aware of the diseases you or your family may be at risk for after flooding, and research how these can be treated. If you find out about these risks ahead of time, you’ll be better prepared to handle them if you ever need to.

A number of things that are useful for repairing damage caused by water include air sterilizers and purifiers, dehumidifiers, and vapor steam cleaners. If you can purchase these before you are met with a crisis, you will be better off when it comes to clean up. You can use these machines to dry furniture, walls and household items if you’re flooded. This will help protect the house from bacteria and fungi.

It’s also a good idea to have masks at home so that in the event of a flood, you will be able to safely clean the sewage with water and wearing a mask. In fact, masks should ideally been worn when you are cleaning anything after a flood.

If you’re cleaning up after water damage, make sure you wear rubber gloves and boots if there is standing water in the house. Turn off the electricity with the main switch and keep any visible electrical wires (not in contact with water) dry. If the house seems structurally unstable, be sure to get out of the building.

When you start cleaning, make sure you don’t keep anything that’s been damaged such as old rugs and books. You’ll want to clean and dry the floors, cabinets and basement. Wet areas can be dried with a low temperature dehumidifier, and the vapor steam cleaner should be used to disinfect the whole house.

Additionally, be sure to check the plumbing and electrical systems. If these require repair, it’s usually best not to attempt repairs yourself (unless you have been trained to). You should call professionals to come out and repair the systems as soon as you can. As for wood items and furniture, wood catches mold easily so if it is not thoroughly cleaned in a timely fashion, wood should be discarded.

The health concerns that you and your family could be at risk for include tuberculosis, influenza and pneumonia. These should all be taken very seriously and they can spread quite quickly, so if you can research these diseases and their treatments as soon as possible, you will be better able to combat them.

Contaminated drinking water is also a serious threat that often follows floods. It’s best to either filter your drinking water with a water purification system or boil it. All dishes should be cleaned in hot water and dried thoroughly.

If you are in an area that has a history of flooding, it’s a good idea to get flood insurance. Also if you’re able to look into restoration after flooding, and purchase the appliances and equipment that are useful for clean up and safety, you will be more ready to handle flooding if it comes.

Water Damage Restoration, Cleanup For Garages And Basements

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Water from a leaking appliance or from storms can damage a homeowner’s garage or basement in a matter of minutes. A homeowner should call a trustworthy water damage restoration company in order to fix the damage as soon as possible. Homeowners should beware that whenever there are bad storms sweeping through their town, there are also fraudulent water restoration companies popping up as well that are only after insurance claims money.

When a basement or garage floods because of too much rain, a homeowner should first call their homeowners insurance company to see if they are covered. Many home insurance companies require flood insurance; even if the house is not located anywhere near water. This is because of the chance of flooding due to excess rain or sewer backup.

If a house is insured for flooding, then a homeowner should contact a reputable water clean up and restoring crew to help fix the problems and make the room look like it was before the flood occurred. A few things a homeowner should look out for is how long the company has been in business; they should be in business for several years and there should be no complaints filed against them with the BBB, Better Business Bureau.

There are several ways a homeowner can be sure they are not going to be taken for a ride when it comes to getting the cleanup of water damage done. They could request the company give them a list of previous customers in order to contact them for references. This is a common practice and the company should be willing and able to provide such a list. People who are content with their work will want to tell others about it.

When searching for a business that performs water clean-up, be sure to find one that has ‘all hours’ and offers free estimates. This way if an accident of water happens in the middle of the night, a homeowner knows they won’t have to wait until morning when their items are ruined before cleanup could begin.

A water cleanup company should also be well established in fixing what went wrong, why or how the water got into the basement or garage in the first place. If a restoration company only cleans up the mess, then it is likely to return and make another mess. A contractor or general cleaning crew might clean the mess but leave the actual problem of water coming from somewhere to simply do it again.

When water comes into the house uninvited as with rain or an overflow of some kind, insurance companies as well as homeowners begin to worry about the mold it makes. Nearly all homeowner’s policies do not permit coverage of mold. When water damage first strikes it is paramount that a homeowner get it cleaned up as quickly as they can because the mold spores are toxic to a person’s health and can do extreme damage to a person’s house.

Making a choice for a good water damage restoration company that will fix and cleanup a homeowner’s garage or basement after a storm or other water accident takes a little investigation. If the company has done a good job in the past, then they should do a good job for you as well. It’s always a good idea to check out the businesses that are going to be working on your home.

Water damage is something that can have a very serious effect upon any home’s internal structure. In addition to this there can be certain problems that will linger a little bit longer, such as mould, bad air quality and smells, and also infestations. It is therefore absolutely crucial that anyone who suffers water damage at home get a water damage restoration technician in immediately to sort the job out. If this is a job that you have and you feel as if you can make a business out of your skills, then you might want to consider some of the following tips.

Of course, it will be very important for you to identify whether or not there is space within the market for you to set up shop. If there is a great deal of competition in your local area then you may not want to consider starting a new business and competing with them. However, if there is space, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to take advantage of this niche.

However, if there is potential for you to start your business and you have the required determination, experience, and expertise to do it, then it will be very important for you to get the necessary equipment that will be used for each job. As a technician working for another company you will have been using the equipment of the company itself, but now you will need to purchase your own equipment. You will therefore need to make sure you have the relevant funds to be able to do this.

You will also need to purchase a vehicle that you can use to carry yourself and all of your equipment to and from different jobs. Make sure that you have a good company name that you can write on the side of the van, and that you add in any other contact details that will be required. Doing this is an important free feature that will enable you to market your business.

Pricing will be another very important consideration that you will have. It will be crucial that you know exactly how much each job will cost you and therefore how much you will have to charge. To do this it might be a good idea to use your experience and also look into some of the local competition to see what their prices are like.

Of course marketing will be another very important aspect of starting up any business. Unless anyone knows that you are offering services you will never be able to get any customers and therefore you should invest in a decent marketing and advertising plan.

It will also be important for you to have an office space, preferably at home, where you can run your business from. Water Damage Restoration After A Flood

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

The first and most important factor in water damage restoration is to locate the source of the leak and repair it. There is no point to repair damage unless the source has been taken care of first or you will just end up repeating the repair over and over again. When a flood occurs, you may need to consider if there is a chance it may happen again and if the chances are high, then you should consider moving or taking steps to protect yourself from having it happen again.

Rot and mold are a big problem after flooding and dealing with these are a huge part of the restoration process. All items in the flooded area will need to be removed, dried, and then properly cleaned. When the area is clear, all remaining water needs to be pumped out with a pump or removed with a wet/dry vacuum.

After you have removed the water, it will take some time to dry out the carpet and the drywall. You should expect to have to run humidifiers, heaters, and high-powered fans for several days. The use of a humidity meter will allow you to more accurately tell when the drying has been completed.

One of the highest attractors of mold and microbes is carpeting and underlay. If at all possible, take up the carpet and allow it to dry separate from the underlay. If that is not possible, keep in mind that the underlay will not be dry until after the carpet is dry. When drying is complete, use an antimicrobial carpet cleaner. Since the area has just spent some time drying, it is preferable to use a dry cleaner so the area will not have to go through the drying process again.

Drywall will also need special attention. Water creates bubbles and roughness on drywall and causes paint to peel. When the drywall is dry, it will need to be sanded, plastered, and painted again. If you are not familiar with plastering, you may prefer to hire someone or get a friend who knows how to do it to help you.

If the damage to furniture and belongings is minimal, drying and cleaning them will be sufficient. If the water was dirty, or the flooding was severe you will need to dispose of the items. Letting go of some of these items will be hard, but the health of you and your family must be considered as the most important factor in this situation.

If the damage is very bad, the drywall and carpeting will need to be replaced completely. If the floodwater contains harmful materials then it is in your best interest to do the replacement. To prevent rotting in the walls and under the floor, be sure to dry it completely before putting up the new material.

In order to protect yourself in such situations, you should make sure your insurance policy covers water damage. If you do have water damage, assess how much it will cost to fix before going to the insurance company because the damages may be less than the cost of the deductible.
