A List Of Tried And Tested Tips On Choosing Bathroom Tiles For Homeowners

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Perhaps as you read this, your mind is going back over that project about replacing those dour bathroom tiles that you have been putting off for so long. When you come to think of it, we all have ideas about home improvement that often end up being nothing more than aspirations we wish for but which we finally fail to bring to bear. However, it is most likely that you have delayed it for this long because you have had very little clue about what to do and where to begin. If that is the case, this guide will help you in getting the best design ideas that you have been searching for.

It may appear as drumming on a point that is more than apparent to someone with an inkling of design but size indeed does matter. It would be nothing short of a design catastrophe to have a tile design that ends up giving the bathroom an appearance of having a constrictive and apparently barely breathable space. In the same breath, you must avoid the very large tiles that can end up dwarfing all the rest of the room.

The issue of hygiene must be given foremost consideration and any possibility, no matter how elegant, must be discarded if it compromises on this factor. After all, bathrooms are places of personal hygiene and any sense of fashion will prove rebuffing unless it pays proper consideration to the highest levels of hygiene. In other words, the chosen design must be easy to clean and maintain in the long run.It must also be mould resistant.

The dilemma that faces many homeowners embarking on a home improvement project is whether to prioritize value addition at the expense of affordability. As a matter of fact, well chosen bathroom tile design ideas can add a substantial amount to the worth attached to your home. Therefore, if necessary, it will well be worth every extra cent you can spend on the project if it will end up increasing the value of your home not to mention the elegance that it will have as a whole.

While attaining a stylish look must given due consideration for all it is worth, it is no use ignoring the fact that bathrooms are first and foremost very functional rooms. Any design idea or scheme must not be done at the expense of this basic utilitarian concept. The tiles you use on the floor are a good way to illustrate the importance of this concept: they must be easy to clean but also not too slippery as to pose a hazard from slip and fall accidents.

The design you go for must also be comfortable all round the seasons. You will no doubt bear testament to the fact that floor tiles can be especially cold on a particularly wintry night. The solution to this lies in adopting under-floor heating systems. This may sound like an ostentatious luxury well beyond the reach of the common homeowner but you will be surprised at how workable and affordable such a plan can be.

The tiles that you go for must also be stain resistant if they are to prove worth the money that you are going to expend on the project. A single tile spoilt for all time by an unsightly stain can prove inordinately costly as many home improvement experts will confide to you. This is because to replace it, more often than not you will have to spoil all its neighbors.

Embarking on a full fledged home improvement project can prove a really costly affair even for apparently well heeled home owners. Even then, the variety of design choices being touted in the market can pose a veritable dilemma even for the very savvy design pundits. It is chiefly for this reason that an easy to follow design guide to choosing the most effective bathroom tiles designs is an essential companion for any homeowner or interior designer.

True Stories of Failed Home Maintenance

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

I spilt a glass of red wine on my friend’s brand new carpet the other day. Well, not exactly my friend. Not anymore. Not after I suggested to them my home maintenance tip for getting bad stains out.

Apparently if you pour candle wax on a red wine stain and then try to iron it out not only will it singe the carpet, char the wooden floors beneath, set off the smoke detector and set fire to the cat, it might also strain friendships just that bit past breaking point.

I even offered to call and pay for a handy man or home repair services, but was not able to call one before the fire engine showed up and I was charged with malignant arson.

The problem with attempting home repairs yourself is that there’s every likelihood of making the issue much, much worse. It’s best to find some home improvement consultants who focus on house repairs or garden maintenance, (dependent on your special situation).

But if you are looking to replace those missing tiles or upgrade the leaky bathroom, it can be difficult to find someone specialized in home renovations or house repairs. Your average workman is more used to the demolition derby approach, which doesn’t really work that well if you have a cramped living room full of the collection of dear antique babushka dolls that you inherited from Aunt Mavis.

Nothing says, whoops I really should not have hired this guy, more clearly than the gloomy, doleful sound of 12 exploding babushka dolls. Oh, Aunt Mavis. How we miss you.

Expert and qualified home-improvement services that come with the head of the line in home repair supplies are harder to find than a wine stain cleaning trick that really works, (and doesn’t fire up the neighborhood). Calling up professionals out of the phone book ends up in Tim the Tool Man Taylor arriving 3 days late and taking a power drill to a load-bearing wall.

Next time you are short of some home improvements, make sure you take a dLook first to find certified specialists in your area and don’t rely on folk remedies for getting the wine out of the carpet.

Finding Water Damage Repair Companies Online

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

It’s a beautiful morning in Chicago and you can’t wait to start your day. You go through your morning routine, shower, coffee, etc. and you remember that you forgot to pull the clothes out of your dryer before you went to bed. You have a little extra time so you run downstairs into your basement to remove the now wrinkled clothes from your drier. Suddenly the phone rings and you run back upstairs to grab it. As your talking to your friend about the amazing weekend getaway you have planned, you finish removing the clothes.

Captivated by the conversation you inadvertently start a new load and go back upstairs to finish getting ready for work. Without realizing it, you drive to the office while your washing machine does everything it can to rinse the clothes you just washed. Unfortunately, the drain becomes blocked and overflows all over the floor. The water seeps up against the walls and under the cabinets.

Your weekend getaway was amazing and you’ll never forget the good time you had. You unpack, go down into the basement and find about a thin layer of water on the floors and the bottoms of your cabinets are wet. Your walls have absorbed a majority of the water and dark stains are visible. You grab the mop, clean up the remaining water, but don’t have a clue what to do about cabinets and walls. Luckily, you have a computer and access to more information than you can handle. The Internet is a great place to find solutions to problems such as the one just described. Water damage repair and advice are just a few mouse clicks away.

When searching for help, be aware of a few things that could end up costing you in the end. First, make sure the restoration company you are researching is local, not some lead generation site who isn’t familiar with the companies they represent. This means finding companies that actually have a building in your city or one nearby. There are many websites claiming to be in your town or can provide service in your town but my experiences have been that these ‘lead generation’ sites do nothing more than market their website and provide you with one or two companies which offer mediocre service compared to others. False claims are rampant on the Internet so be careful. Look for companies that have a link to the Better Business Bureau and have an “A+” rating. Also, look for companies who are members of the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and who have been certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certifications (IICRC). Finally, it’s a good idea to ask questions. A site that has frequently asked questions listed on their website is a good indication that they are popular and a trusted company.

With enough research, you’ll find the perfect water damage company that will restore your home quickly, and with little cost to you. I know because it happened to me. This story is about me and the company I found that helped me fix my wet walls and all kinds of hidden problems caused by the water. The company I chose was Flood Specialists, Inc.

If this has happened to you and you need a trusted water damage repair company, follow my simple tips or visit Flood Specialists, Inc. in Chicago.

What Type Of Flooring Fits Your Decorating Needs?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

One of the first things people look at when they enter your home is the flooring. If it does not look good they may get a poor perception of you. Choosing which type of flooring to put in your house demands your careful consideration. Since your floor is constantly in use you should choose something that fits the level of traffic. If you would like an expensive fix you may try hardwood flooring. Some other options are carpet, tile and laminate flooring.

1) Install Hardwood Flooring- If you love to live in the lap of luxury then this is the floor for you! This floor is beautiful and very expensive. If it fits your tastes then its worth looking into. It is to be desired because it is so beautiful and expensive. Hardwood flooring will add value and beauty to your home for years to come. Hardwood flooring lasts and can really take a beating. When and if your hardwood starts to look dull and scratched, simply sand it down and put another coat of varnish on it. It will continue to be beautiful. Another great thing about hardwood flooring is that it is extremely easy to clean. If you make a mess simply wipe it up. Your floor will be beautiful once again. Hardwood flooring comes in many styles and choices. You may want a dark wood or you could go with something lighter. You are sure to find something you are happy with and will last for years to come.

2) Carpet – Carpet is my least favorite type of flooring. It takes a lot of time to maintain. It collects every particle of dust and dirt and holds it. While carpeting is very popular it is not my favorite. If you are looking to get carpeting for your floor don’t let me turn you away from it. There are many benefits to having carpeting. During the winter when the floor is cold your feet will be on carpet making it more tolerable. Carpet comes in a huge variety of colors and quality. If you do get carpet you may want to have rugs in high traffic areas such as entry ways and in front of the couch. You may want to try a combination of carpet and one of the other types of flooring for variety.

3) Install Laminate- If your looking for flooring that is easy on your wallet then this is for you. You will not have to spend a lot of money on it and it will still look amazing. If your on a low income budget then this is perfect for you. Laminate flooring is very durable and you get your money’s worth. The amount of choices you have when it comes to design and color is almost endless. The great thing about laminate flooring is that if you decide you don’t like it any more in a year or two you can always redo it.

4) Tile- Many people use tile for small areas. It is common to find tile in restrooms and laundry rooms. Since water wont ruin or warp tile it is good to have it in places like this. Tile is also good for the kitchen where spills and messes are common. Tile is also good for doorways and dining rooms. When it is cold tile is not so nice to your feet. You may want to use large area rugs if you tile large rooms. You can also get creative with tile as they come in many shapes and sizes and colors.

Putting in new flooring in your home can be fun. Choose your favorite type of flooring and start setting aside a budget and looking into what style and theme you want in your home. This can be a fun family project or something you pay to have done. You really have a lot of choices so have fun with it.
