Properly installed and managed gutters are a very important in protecting the exterior of your home. Gutters that are not installed properly or that are not cleaned out regularly can become clogged with leaves and debris and actually do more harm to your home than if you didn’t have them to begin with.
Gutters were made to divert run off water from rain, and melting snow and ice, away from your home. Over time, gutters can fill up with pine straw, leaves, dirt and other debris. Once they become clogged, they will not function properly. Rather than diverting the water away from your home, clogged gutters will actually flood, causing damaging water to seep into the eaves, and walls of your home causing rot and possibly even foundation problems. Water that is not properly diverted can also cause damage to landscaping, patios and driveways. All of which can cost an awful lot to repair.
It is vital that you make sure and check your gutters to make sure they are free and clear so that they can function correctly. This is especially true of older gutter systems. If your gutters are blocked, they need to be cleaned out, which can be a very hard, dirty, tiresome job. Plus, having to climb high up on a ladder and reach to rake out those blocked gutters can be down right dangerous.
Today, there are new and improved gutter systems that make maintenance a lot easier. Leaf free gutter and hood systems are designed with a special hood that covers the gutter, keeping out leaves and other debris. The water adheres to the hood and then is diverted down into the extra wide gutter. It is then carried safely away from you home. These types of gutter systems not only protect your home, but also come in a variety of styles and colors to actually enhance the beauty of your home.
But, regardless to what type of gutter system you have, it is vitally important that you check them regularly to make sure they are doing their job. An ounce of prevention can save you a ton of unnecessary work and money in the future.

Rain gutters serve an important part in protecting your home. Although many people do not see them as a protection device, that is precisely what they are. Gutters protect your home from water damage and wood rot by diverting rain water into troughs and downspouts which carry the water away from your house.
Without gutters, heavy rain can run off of roofs and seep into the foundation and cause erosion and permanent damage to the structure of your home. Gutters prevent this from happening.
There are many types of gutter systems today. Most come in a variety of styles and colors so that homeowners can choose what works best and looks best for their home. Today gutters are made of several different types of material. The three most common are aluminum, PVC, and copper. PVC is by far the most inexpensive and come in variety of colors. These are also the easiest to work with because they can easily fit on any home. Aluminum is perhaps the most common. They cost more, but they last longer and they can also be painted. That means if you ever wanted to change the color of your home, you can paint your gutters to match. Copper gutters conduct heat well which helps with ice build up in very winter months. These gutters are very impressive, but have an impressive price tag to go along with them.
No matter what type of gutters one may choose, their purpose is the same. But, as with every other features of your home, gutters have to be maintained. In order for a gutter system to function properly, they must be kept free of build up of dirt and debris. Over time, gutters can become blocked by leaves, pine straw, and other debris which over time can compromise their ability to divert damaging water form your home.
However, there are also different types of gutter systems that keep maintenance at a minimum. One system in particular is the leaf free gutter and hood system. This gutter system consists of an extra wide gutter that is covered with a leaf free hood. The hood keeps leaves, and other debris form entering the gutter. When it rains, the rain actually adheres to the hood and runs down into the gutter and is carried away from your home. With this type gutter system, you do not have to worry about build up and blockage.
Gutters are important. They serve a vital purpose in the protection of your home. If you are looking to replace or install gutters on your home, find a reputable company that will help you decide what type and style will work best for you.

With skills built up over the past 80 years, Cembrit are famous for their natural slate from UK quarries in Cornwall, Wales and Westmoreland and also much further afield from Western Europe, Canada, Brazil, China and India. However, one of their most popular brand of tiles are the manmade Cembrit Westerland fibre cement slates. This slate comes in graphite, blue-black and also Welsh blue and looks very similar to natural slate. Its natural dressed edges and riven surface make it a great solution for where traditional appearance is important. The cement slates are lightweight, very cost effective, do not require grading or sorting and are suitable for all types of commercial and residential construction projects.
Cembrit Westerland fibre cement slates have been used as the finishing touch for Hill House, an elite eco-development in Hampshire, UK. Specifically chosen to give the development a contemporary architectural feel, over 7,000 blue/black slates were used for the 7000 sq ft timber frame house.
Designed by The Malthouse Consultancy, Hill House has been built to a very exclusive design. It is constructed from softwoods, so reducing the pressure on the rarer hardwoods. The design also includes bespoke technology for heating and cooling and like all houses built by The Malthouse Consultancy, Hill House is built to owner specification. Each slate in the Westerland fibre cement range is pre-holed and offers consistent width and weight, saving very valuable on site time on grading or sorting.
The manmade slates from Cembrit are manufactured using Portland cement with a non-asbestos formulation of blended synthetic fibres. Each slate is pigmented during production and fully compressed. They are finished with a high quality, semi-matt acrylic coloured coating to the top face and edges, and a clear binder to the back face.
Quality levels at Cembrit are rigorously maintained to exceptionally high standards with fibre cement slates produced to BS EN 492:2004 and manufactured under the control of a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system. Cembrit UK is a member of Cembrit Holding A/S (formerly the Dansk Eternit Holding A/S) of Denmark, one of Europe’s major building material producers of fibre reinforced cement products for the roofing and cladding industry. The parent company FL Smith last year celebrated its 125 year anniversary.
