Cleo Mussi is a respected mosaic artist based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. She produces both three-dimensional sculptures and large two-dimensional wall-hung pieces. She originally trained in Textiles at Goldsmiths in the late 1980s and is now held in high esteem in the field of Applied Arts both nationally and globally. At Goldsmiths, her department was run by a team of practicing artists and technicians who brought a knowledge and passion for materials processes and techniques with them.
Over the years, the way in which Cleo Mussi works has gradually evolved. However, her interest in the process of ‘making’ and the behaviour of various different materials has never been lost. She is especially interested in working with recycled materials, and her understanding and appreciation of pattern, print, weave and stitch also influences her ceramic creations.
Always totally distinctive, Cleo Mussi’s work incorporates irreverent twists on conventional ideas, and the details are lovingly and elaborately realised. Her solo touring installations, which include ‘The Crowd’, ‘A~Z- a hand book’ and ‘Pharma’s Market’-A live stock and produce show’, have provided a showcase for her highly idiosyncratic approach. She has also completed a number of large public commissions for the likes of The John Lewis Partnership and The BBC Asian Network.
Often, her exhibitions consist of large installations made up of up to 100 individual elements. Many of the materials she uses are recycled – used objects like plates, teapots and bowls feature a lot – and cross-cultural references from fashion, design, travel, commerce and beyond are incorporated into her work which, she says, “represents the story of industrial ceramic history.”
For the past 25 years (since the Goldsmiths days), Mussi has worked with textile artist Matthew Harris. Recently, they had a joint exhibition at Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery, where they showcased a body of work that drew its inspiration from a trip to Japan.

Invader is a French urban artist who works in the medium of mosaic tiles, pasting up images inspired by the 1978 arcade classic Space Invaders and other video games from that era. The highly-pixelated nature of the graphics of these games makes the imagery ideal for reproduction in mosaic form. You can see his mosaic creations all over the world, and he documents all his mosaics in books and maps that show where they are located.
Born in 1969, Invader installed his first mosaic in Paris in the mid-90s. ‘The Invasion’ (his programme of installations) began in 1998 and is still ongoing. The majority of his creations are in Paris, his hometown, but he has also left his mark on at least 31 other French cities, 22 other European cities and many countries in other continents. The tiles he uses are weather-resistant and hard to damage or remove, which means his mosaics tend to stay put.
The locations Invader chooses are selected carefully, with a range of conceptual, tactical and aesthetic concerns informing his approach. He tends to favour busy, populated locations, but has also installed work in more isolated spots. He pasted up a number of mosaics in Montpellier which, when pinpointed on a map, come together to reveal one massive Space Invaders character.
He has also installed mosaics on the iconic Hollywood sign – the first was placed on the letter D on New Year’s Eve, 1999, and the remaining 8 letters were completed on subsequent trips. In 2010, Invader featured in the film Exit Through the Gift Shop.
Invader’s work is definitely about subversion, but it’s not done in an anti-social way. As Banksy has demonstrated, street art can have a real value, both cultural and economic. Of course, a lot of so-called “street art” looks more like vandalism, but Invader’s mosaic creations should never be tarred with that brush.
